加拿大為全球新興的人工智慧重鎮。亞伯達大學的Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII) 是加拿大三大人工智慧Superclusters之一。亞伯達大學在遊戲與人工智慧領域是世界知名的，Google Deepmind 的AlphaGo 開發團隊，就是由AMII的博士生David Silver及當時的後博士研究員黃士傑主導。遊戲研究驅動創新，也是許多解決問題應用開發的技術基礎。此外，AMII 在精準醫療健康及法律資訊應用領域也具有相當的影響力。
AMII 的研究團隊來自亞伯達大學不同的領域，包括：資工科學、醫藥暨牙醫學院和公共衛生學院等，結合各個團隊的專業長才，及結合學術和各方產業的合作，致力於針對亞伯達省、加拿大和全球所面臨的需求開發創新實用的解決方案。AMII 的研究領域包括: Algorithmic Game Theory & Opponent Modelling; AI, Bio-/Medical Informatics, Datamining and Analysis, Deep Learning, Human Machine Interaction and information extraction & Visualization.
2000到2017年間，AMII 在人工智慧和機器學習/資料探勘項目的研究被評鑑為世界第二，僅次於加拿大排名第一的卡內基美隆大學。
Canada has emerged as a leader in global artificial intelligence (AI) development, and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII) at University of Alberta (UAlberta) is one of the three AI superclusters in Canada. UAlberta’s game and AI development are world-renowned. AlphaGo, developed by the team at Google DeepMind, was led by AMII Ph.D. David Silver and AMII Postdoctoral Fellow Aja Huang. “Game research” has always been a driver of innovation, as it provides a technical base for other major applications in more generalized problems. AMII has application impact in the areas of Precision Health and Legal Informatics as well.
AMII is a research lab of UAlberta and its researchers hail from the Department of Computing Science, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, and the School of Public Health. The team conducts leading-edge research to push the bounds of academic knowledge, and forges business collaborations both locally and internationally to create innovative, adaptive solutions to the toughest problems facing Alberta, Canada and the world.
From 2000 to 2017, AMII is ranked as the number 2 AI/ML institute in the world (csrankings.org), second to CMU, which is the first in Canada.
